Not being computer savvy, I thought the gallery was to enable members to use as avatars.  However, this evening I discovered the SMF For Free Support Forum and found my answer there which is the gallery is nothing more than a place for members to store pics.
So what I shall do now is create a thread in the "General forum support board" full of pics which have been correctly sized with links in order to widen the choice members can use as avatars.
I take it I am unable to download any avatars unless I sign up to some hosting package?

An alternative option would be to create a membergroup called "Muted" and change their permissions to remove the option of private messaging.
What a brilliant idea.  Would you also recommend this for trolls?

When you post a reply you shall find a quote symbol situated next to the # symbol. Click on the quote symbol and copy and paste that part of the post which you wish to quote.  :)

I would be grateful if anyone could advise me on how to go about enlarging my avatar gallery.  This is what it looks like now:

Is it possible that the pics I have managed to insert into "Gallery" could enhance the avatar gallery?  If so, how do I get those same pics to show up in the avatar section please?

I wish to check something to ensure I have it right, regarding the membergroups.

I have my own rank groups which are post count based groups.  To these groups I've not granted any general permissions.
I also have three special membergroups.

Cambridge-ites, Charlesonians, Diana-ites, these are regular groups.  I've also not granted them any permissions, however regular members have permissions and therefore would I be right to assume that the permissions granted to regular members WILL apply to these three regular groups?

Ooops sorry, back again. Look, please allow me to clarify once again,  although I have been a member of forums, I've never before attempted to set my own one up and I have made many errors. By the way, using the Create A Forum for free, I did previously did experiment with two others and I'm hoping that with no one posting on them they shall be eventually deleted that is unless I can delete them.
Meanwhile this is the forum I'm keeping and I am almost there:
 http://s1049.photobucket.com/albums/s388/RMGallery/Queries/?action=view&current=forum1.jpg]Screenshot 1
http://s1049.photobucket.com/albums/s388/RMGallery/Queries/?action=view&current=forum2.jpg]Screenshot 2.   It still needs tweaking, but I'm almost there.
I've now become unstuck regarding the gallery. I've surfed this support forum and have taught myself how to download a gallery. I think I have it right: Gallery = Add a Category = Sub Category. Parent Category is the Tudors. Title, name of subject then the Gallery Icon url. Incidentally, I'm using my photobucket account. Hope that is alright?
This is what it looks like: http://s1049.photobucket.com/albums/s388/RMGallery/Queries/?action=view&current=gallery1.jpg]Main Category
 http://s1049.photobucket.com/albums/s388/RMGallery/Queries/?action=view&current=Sub-groupgallery.jpg]then sub category:
The object of this gallery is to enable members  to pick an avatar from the gallery if they so choose. However, the pics I've already downloaded are not showing up in the http://s1049.photobucket.com/albums/s388/RMGallery/Queries/?action=view&current=avatargallery.jpg]Avatar Gallery. Why is that?

The object of the gallery is not to have members add to it.

I've worked out how to set up membergroups.  But how do I get rid of this?  http://s1049.photobucket.com/albums/s388/RMGallery/Queries/?action=view&current=portal.jpg  I know it has something to do with the ex portal.

Sorry I don't think I understood that. If you're changing your username, the forum will email you a new password that you must use. The forum will not accept the old password after changing your username.

Oops!  Sorry.  The penny has finally dropped.  I did warn you I'm a computer illiterate. support

Sorry, I also have another question I would most like to ask  and this is the one which caused me to think if I could set up my own forum in the first place and it is this;

I got so ticked off with the divisions on the forum of which I am a member, I wondered if it is possible to keep them apart?

eg:  Say I was setting up a forum about music, and the Pro-Country Music fans and Anti-Country Music fans were continuously at loggerheads and I want to keep them apart, is it possible to create 2 boards.  1) Pro-Country & 2) Anti-Country?  If so how would I go about it?  I've already tweaked around with the Membergroups and that's not working unless of course I'm doing something wrong.

What I should like is to prevent one group of members posting in a boards which I would prefer them not to.  I thought this was what membergroups were for, but it isn't.  Unless of course once again I am doing something wrong.

Can you please help?

It's ad-free for 45 days which means no advertisements on forums for 45 days. Your forum will forever as long as you or someone else continually post in it so that it's not considered inactive.

That's great, so that means I only have to pay if I don't want the 'ad's' which I shan't after I have taught myself how to do it.

However if you still want to change the username, an administrator must change it for the user and then the forum will make a random password and email new details to the user's email address.
Does that mean, as I was the one to set up the Test forum and therefore the forum has MY password, I needn't have changed my password?

Sending the IP address is normal, it's actually done in case someone is trying to steal someone's elses account.
But was it the forums IP address which was sent?

This service uses SMF 2.0 software and hosts your forum for you (and for free). No you do not have to download the SMF 2.0 software or even download anything at all.
And go ahead and ask all your questions, we'll gobble them up and spit out the answerssupport
This is better than I thought.  In other words, I am already using the SMF 2.0 software so it's just a question of teaching myself how to use it.
Thank you. support
