Karma is like respect basically. You have -1 Karma right now so it shows you have NO RESPECT. (:  Obviously it's just other people's opinions of you but whatever. I didn't give that to you btw, lol..

Yes, karma is supposed to be a way to show helpfulness, etc. on a forum. Depending on the site and permissions karma may or may not represent anything significant. To be honest, I am not sure why it is enabled here. :p
