my forum is a chemistry forum and we have to use symbols such as greek alphabets,arrows,and other constants, but there's no way to do this for now. Is there any way to upgrade my forum to get these symbols? I really need em
-
Can you show me an example? Like how it would work etc?
-
here is an example
www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?action=post;board=5.0
-
I can't see it can you take a screenshot.
-
Im sorry i dont know how to take screenshot. But its easy to see by clicking the link. In the area for starting a new topic in that forum, apart from the normal bold, italic, underline, smilies...
There's another row below where there are buttons for greek alphbet, arrows, etc
-
I don't have a login for the site :(
-
→↑↓ ←You mean these arrows?
-
yes, i mean those arrows.
-
@createaforum pls check your pm
-
@xboi209
how did you make arrow?
-
There's a program in windows called Character Map which you can open and find numerous symbols and such so you can copy and paste it for use. I believe it does have the greek alphabet in there as well, not sure though.
-
Well...somehow i just gotta find a way if my forum's gonna grow. I need that stuff badly! And maybe in a row below the emoticons? Isn't there some code that can put it there?
-
any ideas?
-
I'll see if I can make some code later
-
Maybe i'll copy all the symbols from another website that has them, as a temporary solution. But where will i paste them so a member that wants to use them can see them easily? Is it possible to make them visible whenever a member wants to start a new topic?
-
Oh yeah, that's really easy
-
Here's a code to put in your headers and footers:
Headers:
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js"></script>
Footers:
<script>$("#smileyBox_message").after("→ ↑ ↓ ←");</script>
-
thanks for the code, but i dont know how to put it. Which one goes to headers, and which one goes to footers?
Or can you pls help me put it?
-
I already listed which one goes to which
-
ok i see it
-
right now, i put only the footer code because the header code deleted the forum logo and all the forum tabs, pls can you check if there is any problem with the code?
-
Try putting it at the very top of the headers before any other code.
-
I've done as you said.
It's ok but it's removed thd 'forum' tab and 'home' tab now links to the forum itself. I don't care about that. But i cant see the arrows when i want to start a new topic.
PLs can you login to see for yourself?

There, I fixed it for you. The problem was that the code was broken up into separate lines when they shouldn't be
-
Thank you
-
here are some of the symbols i was talking about.
Is there any way i can have these below the icons in the text area?
→ ← ↓↑ ↑↓ ↑ ↑ e⁻↔ e⁻ →Δ→ ⇄ ⇋
→ hν → ←Δoct→ ⇋ Δ/hν ⇋ Δδ
(AB) ~ JAB → hν/Δ →
α β γ ←δ+ δ-→ ε θ α μ ν λ χ η ħ ν
(↓↑) σ bonds π bond pπ-pπ δ-
←X-A-X →δ- δ-←X-A↑-X →δ-
π → π* σ → σ* π* → σ* d→ π*
σ/π Å 4πr^2 Ψ^2 25 °C <109.5 °
<120° 180° -nFE° = ΔG = ΔH –
TΔS -RTlnKeq
-
Pls is it possible?
-
Oh i already added it
-
Oh i already added it
lol, thanks i haven't been online for some time.
-
I have a question. Is it possible to add new symbols to the ones already there?
-
yeah
-
Thanks.
Pls is it also possible to upgrade my forum to support latex?
-
What's latex?
-
It's a way of writing mathematical equations.
I will test if it's working then give feedback.
-not very important anyway, just wanna find out if it can work on CAF. For now no problems if it dosent work
-
Ahh I see, you could try posting in the suggestions board to see if this gets added to our service.
-
Lol, i recently tried viewing my forum on an outdated firefox browser, and i couldnt see any of those symbols :p
-
Hi xboi 209,
pls i'd like to change everything to make it appear this way
Arrows: →←↓↑↑↓↑↑↔
Greek letters:
α β γ δ ε η θ κ λ μ ν π ρ σ τ φ χ ψ
ω Γ Δ Θ Λ Π Σ Ψ Ω
Other
± ≈ ∞ Å ⁻ ° ≥ ≤ × ħ · ≠
Is this possible?
-
this is a simple fix...
go to your admin panel
go to the "style manager"
go to "customize images"
and edit it directly from there. Simple

Nope, that wont work.
I think it can be done through a code, but no idea how to do it
-
done
-
Thanks!
-
I'd like to know...
Is it actually possible to make each of these symbols clickable?
I mean, is there a way i can make them icons in the text area?
-
I believe it is possible
-
Interesting...
Is there a code for it?, or will it be by a CAF upgrade?
-
I'll work on a code for you
-
I'll work on a code for you
Thank you
-
Actually, can you make separate images for each symbol you want and upload it somewhere so I can download it.
-
how large should the images be? As small as the symbols?
-
Lol i know they're going to be small....already started making the images, not a pro in this but I'll definitely try my best :)
-
Not finished yet, but i've made the images for the greek letters here. I uploaded them in my fb mobile uploads . You can see here
http://m.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.103335783101377.3339.100002748669811&type=1&op=1&v
Please do comment, suggest and criticise. Are they too small or too big? Etc
-
I can't access that, can you upload it somewhere else
-
Sorry, I will post in my fb page. It will be visible then. I will reply when Im finished with the Greek
-
i have tagged all of them in my page. they should be visible now
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chemistry-Planet/164188733691413?sk=photos
-
Btw,
I was thinking if it's possible to use tiny screen shots of each of of the symbols it might be cool and uniform.
#hope this dosen't sound dumb
-
I don't see anything in that link and taking a screenshot and cutting all of them was what I would of done
-
Ok.
Thank you for your reply. Now my major problem is i dont know how to take a screenshot, or maybe my browser cant take a screenshot. Please what kind of browsers can take screenshots?
-
If you are on a windows pc just hit the print screen key and go to paint and paste and you can edit the image that way
-
Thanks for your reply.
Well, I guess I'm a big time flop. It takes me really long to learn these computer things. I was using a firefox, and I clicked the print button in the topic where I wrote the symbols(this is actually the first time I clicked that button), and I was surprised that i couldn't print, talk less edit image. All I saw was a white monochrome page containing some of the page content.
Pls where am I getting it wrong?
-
1) Press the print screen button on your keyboard
(https://support.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.dotcommkt.com%2Fimages%2Fstories%2Fdcm_support_lt_prt_screen.jpg&hash=41127c07bc35d35534e2cc50c685d647e9c84f71)
2) Open paint and press ctrl+v
3) Save
5) Congrats, you finally took a screenshot :p
-
Thank you for the steps.
However, seems there's no hope for me :-(
The Print screen button on my keyboard isn't working. I went to a local cyber cafe and theirs wasnt working :-(. Seems you guys are a miles ahead in technology than us in nigeria.
But I'm not willing to give up yet. Any other ideas/methods?
-
Here's an idea, I took one for you :P
I suggest you widen the white area around each one and create an outline
-
Thanks for the screenshot:)

Hi Michel,
I don't have a board on createaforum--but I do have an EasyphpBB board, and the way I insert Greek letters or other symbols in a post is to go to the Character Map on my PC. In WinXP, it's All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Character Map. You should see a chart with lots of symbols, including Greek letters. The way to copy and paste them is shown at the bottom of the chart.

If you were to cut out the symbols out of the screenshot I just took, A) they'd be small buttons to click and B) Make a square around it so the user knows where to click.

He already knows that but since he has a chemistry forum, he and his users need to constantly use Greek symbols so copying and pasting using the Character Map is inconvenient.
-
Thanks for the replies :)
have a look. Will this color make up for the absence of an outline? Is the size ok?
-
Looks good enough
-
Uploaded nearly all in the staff forum board in my forum.
Comments, criticisms and suggestions welcome.
-
What program did you use to make these?
EDIT: Also, you should host these images somewhere like photobucket.
EDIT2: It'd help a lot if you resize all the images using the width and height
EDIT3: Just realized, this is crazy work for all the symbols o.O
-
Aaah...hope this isn't a dead end :(, this topic has been going in circles. Perhaps my inexperience is getting in the way. Could you elaborate a bit on resizing the image using width and height? I do not understand
'crazy work for all the symbols' --> you mean impossible? Really I wouldnt like to disturb you too much with this, im not in a hurry to get it done.
-
Also...
If this images method is stressful, is there another less stressful method?
-
Well it's a lot of work depending on how I code this but I thought about it now and it seems quite easy. There's usually more than 1 way of accomplishing something through coding :D
What I meant about resizing the images is that one image is 32(width)x32(height) and another image could have a different width and height so resize them so that they all have the same widths and heights.
-
Ok, thanks.
I will try to figure out how to resize images. Btw, must it be photoshop? I mean, I don't have a photoshop account...:(
-
any image editing program, doing it in paint is easy
-
Pls Can you help do it?
-
Well I'm shelving this for now, I'm quite busy
-
Ok, no problems :-|
-
Here's the current code that I have(not working) in case you find someone who's good at javascript/jquery:
<script type="text/javascript">
var img = $('<img>',{src:'',alt:'symbol',class:'michel'});
$('#smileyBox_message').after(img);
$("img.michel").eq(0).attr("src","http://xboi209.comlu.com/Michel/font34_007.jpg").prop("id","test");
$("img.michel").click(function(){
$("textarea.editor").append($('img').attr('id')+" ");
})
</script>
-
Finding a jquery person wont be tres difficile. Please What am I to tell them to do with the code
-
Each image will have an id that will contain the symbol, when you click on the image, append the id of the image into the textarea. This code shouldn't need explaining if the person knows a lot of jquery already
-
I'm going to try to work on this again :-)
-
Oh
Thank you!
-
Headers:
<script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.8.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
Footers:
<script>
function Michel(url,id){$("#smileyBox_message").after("<img src='"+url+"' alt='symbol' id ='"+id+"' class='michel'><img>");$(".michel").each(function(){$(this).click(function(){var symbol=$(this).attr("id");$("textarea.editor").append(symbol+" ")})})}
Michel("URL","SYMBOL");
</script >
At the bottom where you see Michel("URL","SYMBOL");
Replace URL with the url of the image, I highly recommend you host somewhere public
Replace SYMBOL with the actual symbol sign
Copy and paste Michel("URL","SYMBOL"); for more symbols
-
Thank you very much. Now is time to get to work. I will report progress.
-
Hi,
please do you know of any software I can use to edit images so they look like real icons?
Lol i'd like em to look beautiful when Im done.
Thanks,
Michel
