This has been disabled for now due to a few different errors occurring.

Awesome, thanks! I expect this to be very useful. :)

(My less tech savvy forum members also thank you for all your efforts)

The limit is after the image is resized.

As I say, not a big issue, just by chance that the image I chose to test it with had transparency.  Thanks for adding the functionality.

Do you know if the upload limit on posts gets applied before or after the images are resized?

I don't believe it keeps transparency. Same thing with animated gifs they would no longer be animated.

Fantastic, thank you!

Does the resize software maintain transparency?

I've just tried uploading an oversize image and it has reduced its size correctly (which is excellent!).   However the png had transparency and it seems to have lost that or added a black background.  For reference I resized the image externally and loaded on this page:  http://cyclekartsgb.createaforum.com/announcements/forum-layout-changes/msg7840/#msg7840 (https://cyclekartsgb.createaforum.com/announcements/forum-layout-changes/msg7840/#msg7840).

The first image was auto-resized, the second I resized and uploaded.   The thumbnails both have the same issue, but if you download the images, you'll see the second one is correctly coloured.

The third image was auto-resized but the original was saved without transparency - its works correctly.
The fourth image was a jpeg that was auto-resized on upload - again works correctly.

Now, most of the time people load photos so it shouldn't be a major issue, but thought I'd mention it.

Thanks again!

It is live now. Under Admin -> Attachment and Avatars -> Attachment Settings

You can set the max height/width of an attachment.

Thanks!   How does it work, is it configurable and when will it be live?

Added but not tested.

Seconding this as a useful thing if possible. We have just had our second round of "how can you shrink your image" discussion, even with a thread dedicated to it in the "tech info" section of our forum.

Hi

Please add a mod such as https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=2206 to resize images on upload.

Mobile phone create huge images and most users don’t, or don’t know how to, resize images before upload.

Thanks
