why does the the user count somtimes say there are less users offline than there are online?

Are you talking about guests? I can't recall it anywhere where it says people are offline...

sorry, what i meant to say was that sometimes, when i know there are, for sake of argument, 4 members online, why does the user stats say there are only 3 ?
earlier, both me and another registered user where online, chatting using the chat box, and the user stats said no registered users were online. any idea why that happens?

That user probably unchecked the "Show others my online status" option which is found under the Account Settings. Otherwise, just ask the user himself :p

thanks, but i have noticed, when im online on my own, it sometimes says nobody is online,  when my user box says im logged on

This happens to me many times to. I think it's some type of bug with the forum (that perhaps no one has ever reported lol) and sometimes if they are viewing certain areas or replying to threads it doesn't show them as online.
