To start with your forum, I would suggest browsing around the support forum here. Check out other questions here in the General Support section as well as going through some of the articles in the Guides and Tutorials section. Also, you might check out the Style Support board and see if you can find anything to make your forum's appearance different and set apart.

Some tips we have for promoting your board:

1. Put your link on another website that you may have.
If you run another website, throw your link on there so that the traffic to that site can also check out your forum! You could also try posting it on social media. (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

2. Tell your friends and others that are interested in your board.
If you have friends that may think some of the content on your board is interesting, tell them about it!

3. Find similar sites and email the webmaster and ask to exchange your link.
If there's another site or board that has similar content, ask to partner with them. You put their link on your board/webpage in exchange for them advertising your forum!

4. Have some good content and posts to keep users coming back.
This is by far the most important tip we can give. If you don't have good posts and things that will hold user's attention, they won't come back!
