SSL linking from squarespace to createaforum
« on: July 26, 2020, 01:27:09 am »
I have a website that leads to the forum.  The website offers a much needed conduit that takes people through to the forums.

Unfortunately, we are running into a situation where jumping from the squarespace website to the createaforum forum leads to security alerts.  The population I am working with is not very tech savvy and also incredibly paranoid of online attack.  So, the current situation will not fly with them.  I am also not very tech savvy so I am at a loss.  I presume this has to do with SSL but, being tech illiterate, I don't actually know what that means.  Is there a simple work around for this?

Cheers, and thanks in advance

John

Are you using a custom domain here? If so that requires the SSL upgrade under upgrades or the domain manager.
Other option is to park your custom domain to cloudflare and use their ssl.

*.createaforum.com sites have SSL by default

Thank you for your response.

I am not using any custom domains.  I am simply trying to redirect people from a squarespace website to the ***.createaforum.com website.

That said, I guess my squarespace website might be a custom domain.  The website for the front end is abdocs4patients.ca which is behind a password.  Once people have agreed that they want to go to the forum they are directed to abdocs4patients.createaforum.com.  However, when that link is clicked, people are warned that the website might be trying to steal their information.  I believe this issue first appeared when I switched the forum from low security (no need to log in to view boards) to higher security (needing to register in the forum to even see any posts).

I hope something I have said here helps you help me.

I am also engaging some of my colleagues who may be more skilled and knowledgeable about this stuff to help figure this out.

Thanks for any assistance you feel you can still offer.

Cheers

John

I can verify that we are using the the HTTPS address as you describe.

Cut and pasted from the address bar: "https://abdocs4patients.createaforum.com/"

A screen shot that was offered to me from one of my colleagues trying to use the forums:

Again, I want to say I am really thankful you are willing to grind through to a solution with me on this

I will further add that I noticed that on my computer, if I go at this link transfer from squarespace www.abdocs4patients.ca website to the abdocs4patients.createaforum.com in chrome it seems to not show an error message, but if I try this with safari then I also get the error message:

"This website may be impersonating "www.abdocs4patients.createaforum.com" to steal your personal or financial information.  You should go back to the previous page".

I can pull up particulars on the certificate but its a real pain to deliver it to this thread.  I suspect somehow i may have given you the info you need by simply noting safari doesn't work and chrome does...but if you need the certificate details I will type them all out quite willingly and happily.

This worked.  Thank you.  It is all working like a charm now.

If I might ask one more question:  what is the limit size for members on a forum?  While we will likely only be a few hundred to start with, there is a chance our numbers could swell to 10,000.  I imagine there is an option to upgrade to more capacity?

There is no member or post limit.

Only main limits are attachments, gallery picture space which you can upgrade.

Thank you for the fast replies.

I have only one other issue tonight, then I am putting this away.  I have members joining up rather quickly.  The trouble I am getting into is that the registration process has the ability to assign a default membergroup.  But that default membergroup is a numeric value.  I thought I had it figured out, but it seems that my 4th group, which I though was non-confirmed has everyone coming in as newbie (which is a category I don't have).  Is there a numeric way to determine which named membergroup corresponds with its ID number?

Newbie is not a membergroup but a post based member group.

By default everyone is a regular member. the default id is 0

If you create a custom membergroup that would have it's own member id.

Thank you.  Is there a way of figuring out what that number is?

Because so far, trial and error has revealed to me every other group imaginable except the one I am looking for, 0-7 so far has not hit the custom group I created.  0-standard, 1-admin 2-global mod 3-mod 4-newbie 5-member (I think) 6-Sr Member I can't remember 7 right now

Ah, OK, I see that the members list shows my test subject as newbie, because the membergroup seems to be undefined, so the system defaults to revealing the post-count designation.  So that means that my membergroup 4 is seemingly undefined.  Makes me wonder if the non-confirmed membergroup (custom) is supposed to be ID#4 but something is getting in the way of that.

Update.  Problem solved.  Trial and Error showed me that my custom membergroups started at 9.
