I am aware there is a *gify* icon now but that does not allow to upload from laptop, can this be rectified pls?


I am aware of getting links specifically for forums example uploadedit but these links do not seem to last. I went back to check and the links are still there but no animated gifs.


would you need to buy an adds for images/video's?

You can add attachments to your post. Then for images at least you can display it inline in a post.

The gallery system does support videos.  I would not recommend long videos being uploaded due to space limits. Instead link from youtube etc which will auto embed.
