Hello.
« on: August 02, 2018, 03:28:26 pm »
Greetings all,
It was by chance and by shear will that I discover this message board hosting site, and related forums
I'm no stranger to the phpbb format, as I've had message boards in the past. e.g. 'Tough Crowd' with Colin Quinn and The Daily Show (TDS) Experience with Jon Stewart. I had at one time, some servers set up using Microsoft's Enterprise software, which came with the phpbb format as an added feature, and so I had set up many message boards in different ways just to see what is possible with the phpbb format. Well, it seems endless, because of its open source format, and continual updates... and if you know what you are doing, it is quite possible to fully customize a message board to a large degree. For example this site: https://engforum.pravda.ru/index.php?/forum/41-forums/
I have a question: is this hosting, in it's basic form, free indefinitely?
About 20 months ago I had a heart attack that led to heart failure, and so, I can't work enough hours a week to constitute an income of the sustainable kind. I've applied for SSI disability, and if I get it, I plan to buy the Ultimate Plan package from Create A Forum.
Thank you for all your time and effort!
Sincerely,
maintain

Thank you for your reply. Heart failure coupled with the lack of sleep, makes for fuzzy thoughts regards what is read. Add free for thirty days... the rest is free for life! Got it.
Again, thanks.

I have another question: due to the trolling nature of some people, I wish to make my message board 'private' and where all members registrations must be approve by me. I found a feature in the registrations section of the admin panel... but I'm not sure exactly will happen if I start making changes.

I can't seem to find these features as I remember them, at present, and so any help regards this subject will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Just to be clear here: when I had those other message boards, I had an IT Admin., and I was most fortunate to have a co-Admin., sign on--who was/is well versed in phpbb and Linux systems.
It is sort of a bad thing when I'm poking around the Admin panel... OOPS! was said too many times, ergo the caution regards making changes to a functioning message board.

Note: the public may read, but posting and etc., will be for members only.
I may set up a hidden section for admins/mods and family members... if I can just figure it out.

The setting to turn on admin approval is found under
Administration Center » Registration » Setting

Then if that is enabled under admin -> members you can review members to approve them.

I like to use custom fields on registration to collect more details on members that signup as well.

Thanks!
These new lay-outs for Admins are fantastic. Back in the day... some of the Admin. stuff was off limits to me, because you had to know the code and where to place it.

Some of the terms have changed over the last 14 years, and so I just need to figure out the semantics of it all and I'll be doing fine.
I looked and looked for an 'edit' button... then it dawned on me that 'modify' is the same function as edit.
Thank you for your timely reply!

Glad you enjoy it. I have run a few phpBB hosts over the years. Then built Create A Forum with a lot of features that I normally would use.

Rather than waste a lot of time looking for features, that may not be available for this version of phpbb, it's easier to just ask the question:
I've included a section, of which in the past I was able to hide from public view, even the forum itself, and only members approved for that forum could see it from the main page, and of course were allowed to enter there.
Is that possible with this version?

I think I have located the correct permissions and whatnot. I'm sure I'll get this figured out, eventually.
These forums are so rich in features that I get lost in thought as to all of the possibilities.... which is where my biggest hang-up is.
Again, thanks.

YAY! I found all the controls & setting and I was able to set up and hide a private forum for family members.
However, the last post's title shows in the forum stats in the lower left-hand section of the main page.
Is there a way to stop 'private' postings from showing there?

There is not a way unless you have the private board upgrade one time fee.

In due time. It's not a big deal, not much shows anyway, save for the first few words in a thread title.
Give enough time and resources, I'll max-out that forum.
Might even build another site, if warranted.
You've been most helpful!
Thank you.

I am at wits end... and I know I'm going to be embarrassed by the answer, once the question is asked: How do I force a post to the top of a forum and make it sticky?
I've looked and looked for this feature, but can only find the icon that relays the meaning of what a sticky post will look like if it marked as such.
Thanks!
 :o at self.
